if it were simple, then surely we would have solved it by now. instead, last year I listened to a presentation by current women faculty and graduate students which outlined exactly the same problems as were reported in the 1999 study.

perhaps it is *not* in fact easy to speak up when you see something wrong. Isn't that what the letter is about---the attacks people face for speaking up, which silence them?
