I don't consider myself an extreme utilitarian. Indeed, I'm concerned about maximizing the minimum utility over individuals. But that's actually consistent with my argument, which is that for a long time certain peoples' utility was not being factored in at all. I believe that what used to feel like maximizing overall utility was often really a cases of maximizing utility for the privileged at the cost of worse utility for the less-privileged, and that conversely what now feels like an attack on those with privilege is instead just an incorporation of the utility of the underprivileged into the calculation.
